Giant, Prehistoric Crocodile Discovered
Posted 10/4/2011 by Kyle
A new species of crocodile was recently discovered in a Colombian coalmine. Luckily, it wasn’t a live crocodile that someone stumbled across in the mine. It was actually the ancient fossil of a 20-foot-long reptile that walked the Earth about 60 million years ago. This prehistoric crocodile was found in the same coalmine as a fossil of the Titanoboa, which was a giant snake that lived during the same era. Colombia was once home to some really big reptiles!
Scientists have named the new crocodile species Acherontisuchus guajiraensis, which means "Acheron crocodile of the Guajira Peninsula.” What would you have named it?
